Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a serious and often fatal form of cancer contracted from asbestos exposure. It affects the mesothelium, a thin layer of cells lining the body's internal organs. On average, mesothelioma patients begin showing signs of the disease 20 to 50 years after exposure. Because of the lengthy time to develop symptoms, many people's cases are far developed once they are discovered, making it more difficult to treat.

There are three recognized forms of mesothelioma. Pleural mesothelioma is the most commonly diagnosed form, and it occurs in the lining of the lungs. Pleural mesothelioma is often mistakenly referred to as lung cancer. Many patients have a life expectancy of about 1 year after being diagnosed. Peritoneal mesothelioma affects the lining of the abdominal cavity. Pericardial mesothelioma develops in the lining of the heart, known as the pericardium.

As of now, there is no cure for mesothelioma, but if caught in time, there are treatments which have been proven to reduce the amount of cancer and to slow its growth.

Asbestos Exposure

Asbestos exposure is the primary cause of mesothelioma. Once used as a cheap and abundant building material between the 1940's and the late 1970's, asbestos can still be found inside of many older buildings across the United States. While abatement techniques have been utilized, such as coating or sealing off asbestos filled areas, exposure can still happen in many of the more worn and less cared for buildings. Asbestos fibers are tiny and it can only take one inhaled into the body to trigger a case of mesothelioma. Primarily those exposed to the dangers of asbestos were people who dealt with the substance in their jobs. People such as dock workers, military personal, and construction workers experienced a higher level of exposure, but so did their families if the employees carried fibers home on their clothing. Today, more of the general populace is being exposed to asbestos due to aging buildings and improper removal techniques.

Occupational Hazards

When asbestos use was at its height, many workers were exposed to asbestos before the dangers were realized. Today, many of the same type of workers face the dangers if they are forced to work in older buildings or are in professions which would require them to remove or replace asbestos laden components. Because of its heat resistant properties, asbestos has been used in everything from building insulation, to floor tiles, to brake pads for automobiles. This means that workers from many different professions can be exposed such as: mechanics, pipe fitters, cement finishers, and sailors.

During the 9/11 attack in New York, those who were in the vicinity of the Twin Towers were exposed to a high concentration of asbestos dust in the atmosphere that was released from the materials of the buildings. Firefighters, volunteers, and other first-responders worked in the deadly debris without realizing the danger.

Because asbestos was affordable and versatile, it was used in military buildings such as barracks, mess halls, and administration buildings across the different Armed Service Branches. Veterans who served between the 1940's to the 1970's may have been exposed.
